Fractions with different denominators are called unlike Fractions and Fractions with same denominators are called like fractions,

    So we add, unlike fractions.

The steps involved for adding fractions with different denominators are as follows:

Suppose we have two fractions with different denominators like 2/3 and 3/6.

Step 1. In step 1 we find L.C.M of both the denominators i.e L.C.M of 3 and 6.

    L.C.M of 3 and 6 = 2×3 = 6.

Step 2. So, L.C.M is 6. Now convert both the fractions as their denominators become 6.

In other words, we make equivalent fractions of both the fractions having common denominators as 6..

    We multiply 2/3 by 2/2.

    = 2/3 x 2/2 =4/6

    and multiply 3/6 x 1/1 = 3/6.

    Step 3. Add both the new fractions having denominator 6. 4/6 + 3/6 = 4+3/6 = 7/6.

    Our answer is 7/6.

Step 4. 7/6 is in simplest form. If our answer is not in simplest form then convert in simplest form or lowest form.

    Let us look other example.

Now we add three unlike fractions, suppose we add

    2/3 + 4/5 + 6/9

    Step 1. Find L.C.M of 3,5 and 9

    = 3x3x5 = 45

    L.C.M = 45.

Step 2. In step 2 we make equivalent fractions of all fractions with common denominator 45 (because our L.c.M is 45)

    So, 2/3 x 15/15 = 30/45

    4/5 x 9/9 = 36/45

    6/9 x 5/5 = 30/45

    Step 3. Add all fractions with the same denominator 30/45 + 36/45 + 30/45  = 96/45

Step 4. In step 4 we convert our answer to the lowest form.

Both the numbers are divisible by 3.

    96/45 ÷ 3/3 = 32/15.

    our final answer is 32/15.
